Tax deductibility

Career-related training is fully tax-deductible. Employees enter them in the tax return under income-related expenses, self-employed persons as business expenses. The following costs are deductible:

  • Attendance fees
  • Examination fees
  • Technical literature
  • Working materials, office supplies, and postage
  • Library membership fee
  • Travel expenses to classroom events (€0.30 per kilometer)
  • Meal allowance
  • Overnight expenses

The tax return can be filed in paper format or electronically up to 4 years retrospectively. When submitting electronically via Elster the salary, for example, is entered automatically.

Education premium

All information on the education premium is available at www.bildungspraemie.info or via the free service hotline 0800 - 2623000.
A premium voucher covers up to 50% of the course fees or a maximum of 500€. Employees under 20,000 € income can apply for it after a free consultation. The savings voucher is another funding option, regardless of income.

Further education support programs and instruments of the federal states

Many federal states offer funding programs with support from the European Social Fund (ESF). The following websites provide detailed information:

BAföG and education loan

According to Section 7 (2) BAföG, degrees and studies leading to professional qualifications are funded. Information is available from the relevant BAföG offices or via the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Favorable loans are available, for example, through the KfW. You can find an overview of development loans at: http://www.bildungskredit.net/

Support for the gifted

The promotion of the gifted is aimed at particularly gifted people with vocational training. The Foundation Begabtenförderungswerk berufliche Bildung (SBB) coordinates the program. It supports subject-related or subject-independent continuing education with scholarships. Since 2008, there has also been the "Aufstiegsstipendium" (advancement scholarship) for vocational graduates who are aiming for a university degree.

Funding by foundations

Many foundations support continuing education and training. More information can be found via the foundations database of the Association of German Foundations or the database of the Maecenata Institute for Philanthropy and Civil Society at the Humboldt University in Berlin.

Funding by the employer

Many companies and public institutions promote further training measures for their employees. Ask your superiors or the personnel department in which form an individual promotion could be considered for you.
